Acid Reflux Disease (also known as GERD, or the colloquialism 'heartburn', though the disease has nothing to do with the heart) is a condition that causes a malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter muscle (LES).  As a result, stomach acid can leak into the esophagus causing a painful burning sensation.
