At a Glance

Acid Reflux symptoms are caused by a malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle.  When working properly, the LES closes and opens the lower end of the esophagus allowing food to come into the stomach.  When the LES cannot close completely after food empties into the stomach, stomach acid comes up through the esophagus causing a painful burning sensation as well as damage to the esophagus.
