What is Acid Reflux?

At a Glance

Acid Reflux happens when stomach acid leaks into the esophagus causing a painful burning sensation in the stomach, esophagus and throat.  It is also known as GERD or heartburn and varies in frequency and severity from person to person.  Stomach acid enters the esophagus when the lower esophageal sphincter muscle fails to completely close and separate the stomach from the esophagus.
