I started as a child w/ a milk allergy, at which point all of my teeth turned gray and died. A three years later, I developed frequent UTIs and was hospitalized at one point, thinking I had the flu. Two years go by and I can't keep food down. I have a hiatal hernia. over the next two years I go from weighing 85 lbs to the 190's by the time I am 14. I then have acid reflux. At 15, I vomit on a daily basis. I have a gall stone the size of a golf ball. It's removed, I lose 16 lbs & immediately gain it back. At 18 I stop having bowel movements, my temperature spikes, I can't keep food down, ER provides super power laxatives. At 21 I start having horrible pain in my stomach, spreads into my chest & spine, leaving me in the fetal position. Also, more than 20 new cavaties have developed in my teeth. At 22, I stop having bowel movements again, can't keep food down, undergo upper & lower scopes, everything looks fine. Prescribed protonix reglan & miralax. Start having pain near my ovaries, had constant vaginal bleeding for 6 months, progestin to stop the bleeding, ultrasound-results normal, vitamins for overall health. Developed pain in my left side under ribs, sometimes dull, sometimes so sharp I couldn't stand. Undergo 2nd upper scope in 13 months. Prescribed Ibuprofen, no benefit, pills for nerve pain-no benefit, pills for colon pain-no benefit, changed from protonix to nexium-a wk ago, no benefit yet. The pain has subsided over the last month or so, but I still experience vomiting, especially if I eat anything with sugar in it. My diet is healthy, I exercise on a regular basis, I don't have a lot of stress, other than the 39 doctors visits in 2008. Is there something I can look into to help me find a cause. My doctors have been unable to find one as of yet. And I'm exhausted, and tired of having one problem after another with no answers. I'm 23, and I feel like I'm 63. I do have regular days, where I feel fine other than the fatigue, but they come and go, and I don't know where to start.

Hello Lucia,

I am sitting here shaking my head as I read about your journey. I am not an expert-I am a mom and I found with my children's "medical mysteries" that all of the symptoms made sense once I found out the underlying cause. For one child, it was GERD and asthma, for the other, it was GERD and POTS. I know you will figure this out and it will all make sense.

The clues that stand out are Milk allergy as a baby and sensitivity to sugar. Have you had food allergy testing? Endoscopy with biopsy to look at food allergy, lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance, celiac disease, h pylori and eosinophilic esophagitis? Foods sometimes cause constipation, vomiting and pain if there is an allergy or intolerance. On the other hand, there are many, many reasons for your symptoms so I really want you to work with a doctor on this.

Most of all, what helped me figure out the "medical mysteries" was finding one doctor who really listened and was an excellent problem solver. This doctor can be your primary doctor or one of the specialists. I wonder if one of the doctors you  have seen seemed to be a good listener and problem solver. Maybe you could go back to that doctor and ask him/her to help you sort out the symptoms and make sense of what is going on.

Let me know your thoughts.
