Q: What foods cause a build up of Stomach Acid

I was diagnosed with Gastric Cancer. I was treated with chemotherapy & gastric Stomach removal (45%.) The Small Stomach remaining is causing ulcers.  What foods increase the build up of Stomach Acids?

HI James,

Sorry to hear of your history. Hope you are managing OK, now.

 

Your question seems straightforward enough but is not easy to answer.

The problem is, we are all different and react diffreently to different food stimuli. It may be to do with our upbringing and diet we were subjected to in infancy. The fact is, whereas some find particular foods stimulate acid production, others may find the self-same foods perectly innocuous.

There are various triggers that start the body preparing for food. The smell of dinner cooking for instance, not only starts us salivating but can start the proton exchange in the parietal cells that create the hydrochloric acid in the stomach's mucosa.

If you eat at the same time each day, your "body clock" may sufficiently trigger this preparation.

 

Perceived wisdom tells us to avoid acidic foods as we don't want to add extra acid. However, it's not so much the acidity of what we consume but the "acid ash" residue of its interaction with stomach acid. It may be that, recognising some foods as acidic, our bodies have learned it's not necessary to produce so much acid to digest them. This may explain why some people find taking some apple vinegar prior to a meal helps them - by fooling the stomach to think it will be receiving more acid.

BUT, only use these lists as guidelines and discover for yourself what your own particular trigger foods are. BUt the main ingedient to watch out for is fat. It does not dissolve in acid (requiring the bile it will meet in the duodenum) and will remainin the stomach longer being churned and sprayed with more acid that won't be neutralised.

 

Meantime, the best way to reduce the production of stomach acid is to use a Proton Pump Inhibitor drug which effectively stops some of the cells making acid. (The different ones available are listed at the bottom of this page: https://sites.google.com/site/barrettswessex/treatment/drugs )
