Have you heard of taking Protonix to help in swallowing? Acid reflux isn't a problem.

My mom was having problems with food getting stuck in her throat. She was prescribed Protonix and that did the trick. Now that she's in a nursing home for rehab from a knee operation they switched her to Prilosec (she doesn't have acid reflux) and they refuse to switch her back to Protonix after I explained that she's taking the Protonix for her swallowing. The doctor at the nursing home said the two medicines are the same and won't change her back. Have you heard of my mom's problem being helped with Protonix?

Dear Jo,

Protonics and Prilosec are both brand names of a medication that reduces or eliminates acid in the stomach. It is used to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Most patients with GERD have heartburn or the sensation of food coming up the food pipe. Some people with GERD also have difficulty swallowing food.

Changing the medication brand usually doesn't change the effectiveness of the treatment. A few patients find that they need to use a specific brand.

The doctor may have changed the medication due to insurance coverage.

Good luck,

Jan Gambino
