Dear Jo, Protonics and Prilosec are both brand names of a medication that reduces or eliminates acid in the stomach. It is used to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Most patients with GERD have heartburn or the sensation of food coming up the food pipe. Some people with GERD also have difficulty swallowing food. Changing the medication brand usually doesn't change the effectiveness of the treatment. A few patients find that they need to use a specific brand.
