Q: can it be acid reflux even though don't have heartburn?

Often once I fall asleep I wake up in a panic and feel like I'm choking.  I have a lot of congestion in my throat at night on a regular basis. I do eat late, eat a lot of spicy food and drink a couple glasses of wine a night.  I think it's diet related but can you have acid reflux without the heartburn? I was reading about Prilosec, one of these PPI's that are suppose to help heal the esophagus.  I'm worried about the risk in developing cancer cells.  Please advise.. Thanks!

Hello,

Certainly it is best to check in with the doctor before trying an over the counter medication. Ask the doctor if elevating your bed so your head is higher and adjusting your diet would help too.
