Currently taking Nexium for Acid reflux

Bobby J
08/12/08

For several years I have been living off of Tums for heartburn, this last year I was prescribed Nexium to releive heartburn. It worked, and no longer have heartburn.

What I now have is "reflux larangytis". as the day progress' my voice becomes more and more hoarse. I have seen 2 specialists, and the last time I was there, they looked at my throat, and said "its fine", gave me  voice test, said "normal".

I was told to watch my diet, cut our caffeine, chew my food better, prop the end of my bed up 6" so the reflux does not go to my throat during the night.

I have done my best for these, but dont really see any positive changes in my voice.

I am taking Nexium once a day, should I be taking double the dosage (on doctors advise only) or is there something out there that can do the trick better than Nexium?

Hi Bobby,

Thank you for your question. There are other medications similar to Nexium on the market, and you may want to talk to your doctor about trying one of those. The medications are all in the same class and work the same way, but each medication has a different effect on different people. Protonix just came out in generic form (pantoprazole), so you may want to try that one first to see if it works any better than the Nexium for you. There is also another class of medications, call H2 Blockers, which includes medications such as Tagamet, Zantac, Axid, and Pepcid. Some of the H2 Blockers have a lot of drug interactions, though, so be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting one of these medications. And remember, this website is helpful to learn more information but should not be used in place of the recommendation of your physician.

Best of luck,

Casey
