Hi Ravi,

It's tough on a parent when our children do not feel good and we have difficulty figuring out what to do to make them better!

There are a couple good links to help you manage your child's care. Even though this says for infants, much of the information is good for older children too. You can read a good overview here about infant/pediatric GERD. There is also information about gas here and belching here. It is possible the GERD is caused by food allergies, and you can read about that here.

There are a couple of resident experts on HealthCentral who deal mainly with children, not only in a professional way, but because they have acid reflux children too. You can read about Jan Gambino here and Tracy Davenport here. They both have great tips to help you make things a little better for your child.

I hope this helps! Take care and stay in touch. Let us know how you and your child ar doing!

Dear Ravi,

Thank you for posting your message.

I would recommend reviewing the symptoms of reflux available on this website and keeping a journal. Write down how often the symptoms are occurring and take this information to the doctor. Is it burping or more of a loud belch? Does it seem wet like a wet burp or throw up?

Sometimes eating smaller meals and chewing carefully can reduce reflux symptoms. Sometimes burping and backwashing are caused by food allergies and intolerances. Be sure to write down a typical diet for a few days to present to the doctor. Sometimes adjusting the diet helps greatly.

While you can educate yourself about this topic, there is nothing like getting a full evaulation from the doctor and coming up with a treatment plan that is custom made for your child.

Take care,

Jan Gambino
