Hi Sue,
It's possible that you are getting dust particles in your mouth and nose when you allow a fan or aircondtioner to blow in your face. You might want to avoid ou can read it hethat if possible. Sloane Miller wrote a good article comparing air filters. You can read it here. If this is a problem for you, you might want to look it getting an air filter for your home.
