Q: Can grain allergies cause acid reflux?

I have many food allergies that have caused eczema in childhood, then hay fever and mild asthma after two years of unsuccessfull allergy shots, then developing into migraine headaches in my thirties which have become much worse. I am now 62 and have had acid reflux for 10 years, could this be caused by the allergies? I have also taken many different migraine medications, the latest being Topamax for the last six months. Could the acid reflux be connected to the migraines?

Reflux is a known symptom of food allergy. When you are allergic to a food, your body overreacts to one or more of the porteins in the food. If the gastrointestinal sysem is the "contact organ," or the part of the body that shows the allergic reaction, reflux symptoms may be the result. Even though our book, Making Life Better for a Child with Acid Reflux, is geared toward children, the book contains two chapters by two different experts that address allergic reflux that you may find helpful. In addition, Jan Gambino recently wrote a SharePost supporting the connection between migraines and reflux. I hope this helps! Reply
