Q: Should I stay away from meat if I am suffering from GERD?

I just reccnetly realized that I have been suffering from GERD after a trip to the ER when I was having trouble breathing. After this painful "flair up", I am trying to figure out what food to stay way from until I feel better. Ive seen conflicting statements about meat.

Actually there's a lot of conflicting information about foods in general out there. Some "meats" such as hot dogs, salami, cheeseburgers, etc. tend to be high in fat which if eaten frequently and/or in large quantities can be hard to digest. Lean meats though in general are not considered problematic but anything with fat or protein is going to take a bit longer to get through the GI tract than carbohydrates. That said, we all need a balanced diet not one with only carbohydrates so finding the meats that don't upset YOUR GERD is important. The best way to do this is to keep a log for a couple of weeks if possible. Write down how you feel and what you eat. After a while you might notice some trends that may or may not follow what the general dietary guidelines say. I know I finally figured out that bananas (especially those not quite all the way yellow yet -just the way I like them) always cause my GERD to flare. My brother and sister have the same issue - yet I've never seen bananas on any list.

The best advice I was given regarding food and gerd was to find my own flare ups. What acts as a trigger for 1 person may be perfectly fine for another. Spicy food is not too good for me however I also manage night time reflux by avoiding sleeping in a prone position, this seems to aleviate symptoms quite well.

I avoid medications if at all possible as many cannot be taken for long periods of time and I prefer to find the best ways to manage the symptoms. Take the time to understand your symptoms as this will help you to counteract the effects. good luck!
