I've cut back on my Nexium to every other day. Why is my reflux worse than before I started it?

I was taking Nexium once a day for 6 months. It worked great. My doctor cut me back to one pill every other day. My reflux is worse now than before I started taking Nexium. Why is my reflux worse now? Will I have to take Nexium forever?
