Q: I was given omeprazole dr 20mg for acid reflux. I have not been able could take it.

I was given omeprazole dr 20 mg for acid reflux.  I have not been able to tolerate this drug- severe belching and bloating.  I have also tried Prilosec OTC and had same reaction.  Is there a medication I could take that does not have this ingredient in it?

Omeprazole is the generic form of Prilosec. There are many other Proton Pump Inhibitors and everyone tends to react to them differently. My Mom cannot take Prilosec but can take Prevacid. You need to go back to your doctor and ask her this same question.

Another option may be H2 blockers such as Zantac or Pepcid. They are considered a less strong medicine in comparison to a PPI but may be something to consider as well.

You need to go back to your doctor and tell her about your reaction and ask what your alternatives are. Here's a link to more information about meds:

Hello, I have had the same experience while taking prilosec and also nexium.  I have been told that all the meds may have the side effects of nausea, upset stomach gas and diahrhea.  I think I am going to switch to zantac and see if that will help any.  Hope things get better for you.
