Monday, November 24, 2008 Marty asks

Q: What kind of doctor do you contact if you are having esophageal spasms?

I had a lap band put in 8 months ago.  For the first 4 months I had no problems, then began to have problems choking and regurgitating a lot.  All of the saline solution has been removed from the band, the band placement has been checked with an upper GI check and I have had a barium swallowing study with pudding and crackers.  Nothing showed except poor closure of the cricopharyngeal stucture and slow peristalsis.  I am still having a lot of problems, sometime after only 2 or 3 bites and now the pain goes down into the chest area, burning and hurting.  I am not losing weight (I wish I were). None of the doctors have suggested anything more and I am terribly frustrated.  I am 68 and do take Nexium.

Hey Marty,

I do believe the type of doctor you are looking for is a gastroenterologist. You've probably already seen one in order to havey our lap band inserted. However if your doctor/surgeon is not giving you the answers you need, I would urge you to try a new doctor and keep searching until you find someone who can give you answers.
