Q: will gerber rice cereal give my 2 1/2 month old grandbaby gerd?

I have my first 2 1/2 and and half month old grandbaby that im with everyday. she is so full of personality and smiles as shes growing. In the past 2 week or so,, I started seeing her not satisfied with the formula itself, so I suggested we start her on a little gerber rice cereal as I did with the 3 daughters I raised. All went well for the first week,, she was happier and ate very well,, started sleeping almost all night and was eating about 1 to 2 oz. cereal and a 3 oz to 4 oz bottle of fomula a feeding. I noticed she started wanting to eat less and less..after the second week....it went from every four hours to every 6 to 7..that didnt seem right but I mentioned it to my daughter to only feed her the cereal 2x a day ,once in the am and once before bed and bath..where she will sleep better. well..now I noticed the signs of crying alot, arching the back as well as not wanting to eat as much and instead of the nomal spitting up,,she was also weezing,,then she started throwing up everything you feed her. I started her on the pedialite so she doesnt get dehidrated,,she wasnt keeping much of that down either. yesterday I saw here pushing the nipple away with her tonuge and I thought,, something isnt right..so today I took her to the doctor,, and she said she has acid reflux and G.U.R.D..(she put her on a med).which I have been reading up on here.Im glad I found this website to get me through this,as a grandmom im scared for my grandbaby,, I hope it doesnt get much worse and hope its not from me putting her on the cereal to early ,, I just did what I did for my kids thinkin it would help,, I have read all the stories on here and my heart goes out for all of those mother out there stuggling with this......

Because she didn't have signs of reflux before the cereal and then she got them after the cereal then it is possible that the cereal is causing some issues. Every Grandma I know would've done the same thing. I know I was started on rice when I was 6 weeks old. Now the recommendation is 4 to 6 months to start.

My daughter had reflux from birth. At 3.5 months I put her on cereal thinking it would make things better since cereal is one of the treatments for reflux. Well, in my daughter's case she had a hard time moving things through her system (I figured this out months later) so the cereal actually made things worse. And, for her it added constipation to the mix.

Also, Gerber rice cereal has soy in it. So, it could be that her body isn't quite ready for the solids or if she isn't already taking a formula with soy then the soy could be problematic.

Lastly, it could be a complete coincidence! Maybe she's more active which is making her reflux more?! or possibly she got a little virus?!

Did you see any improvement when you decreased the cereal? That would be another clue.
