I have been on Prilosec for 6 weeks for my Acid Reflux and seen no improvement. Is this normal?

My prilosec prescription is over-the-counter 20 mg.  I began taking it around August 16th.  My symptons still are rather severe- hoarseness, weak vocal quality in the evening, etc.  I would really love to fix this, as I am a singer.  It is just so depressing.

No cure in sight. I have been taking Prilosec over-the-counter 20mg for 6 months now with no improvement. I don't have the hoarseness but I experience continued nightly Acid Reflux. On days when I don't take the Prilosec my Acid Reflux is worse. I have tried other proton pump inhibitors with no improvement. My doctor recommends that I continue with the medication.

Good Luck

It's not as strong as the prescription - I think mine was over 100 mg, twice a day.

I changed to Pepcid AC and it works better.

Or you could see a doctor for help.

Double up the prilosec by taking one in the morning 1/2 hour before eating and one about 8 hours later.  At bedtime take one Zantac.  The Zantac must be spaced away from the Prilosec or it will inhibit adsorption of the Prilosec.  If not better in two weeks ask to add carafate suspension to this regimen and also see if you have significant sinus drainage or infection.  Do not eat after about 7:30 at night and elevate the head of your bed using two bricks under each bedpost.  NO caffeine, expecially no expresso based drinks limit Soda. NO alcohol. Limit spicy foods.  Limit fried or fatty foods.  I.e. eat a careful mediterranian diet.  Be very care about milk and milk products.  They may seem to be soothing but cause a reflux kick back.  Eat more frequent but smaller meals.  Some Proton pump inhibiters work better than others for specific individuals so you may need to try acifex, protonix, prevacid or others.  If Prilosec does not work for you skip Nexium because it is chemically almost identical.  Healing takes a very long time and it takes very little to disrupt it.

Hello Teri:  I have very bad reflux, in fact it is getting worse and i have been on nexium 40mg. for five years now.  I am limited to what i eat home or out because i have had it for as long as six hours.  I am due to see specialist again,   lung problems came up and like you i also am sick of the hoarseness and i cough too!  If you haven't had an endoscopy, sure would recommend , as my  picutes came back with rawness.  I believe Nexium treats both so it heals and helps with acid.  My mother is on Previsid only 20mg. and she eats anything she wants to, but that is not my case and if I am stressed out bad, i could have it three times a week.  I hope you get right help and it works for you, by the way, i have had three endoscopies for lungs and one esophagus and it doesn't hurt at all, you are asleep for a very short time so don't be afraid. minx

It's the same with my nexium.  Maybe I just don't notice that it's helping.  Prilosec really worked for me but they put me on nexium because that is what the pharmacy carries.  I don't think it's normal for you not to see improvement.  With Prilosec I saw improvement almost immediately.  I think it's different for different people and their different body chemistry.  Maybe you ought to ask your doctor about another option.  There's nexium, aciphex.  I hope this helps.

I found that to be true also.  My doctor told me that for bad cases of reflux that 20 mg. per day was not enough.  He advised me to take one before breakfast and another one before my evening meal.

I have had no problems since I started the two purple pills daily.
