Q: I've had a chronic cough for 5 years with no symptoms of GERD. Need advice, please!

Hi - I'm being treated for a horrible, chronic cough that is suspected to be caused by GERD.  I have just started using Prevacid.  Is it possible that I would rarely have a feeling of "heart burn" and still have a cough that is caused by GERD?

Also, I have osteopenia and a large family history of osteoporosis.  What are the facts behind PPIs contributing to osteoporosis??

Finally, I was first prescribed omeprazole.  My face broke out in hives two weeks later.  What are the chances that it was caused by the med.?

Thanks so much for all your helpful replies.

I had the cough for months once as a teenager. In my opinion, this shows that your GERD is mild. Improve your diet and lose weight if need be.

I can't answer all of your questions except to comment that I don't have the heartburn and other symptoms but I do have the reflux as shown on examination.  I have the cough and irritated throat though.
