My son is 4 1/2 month old, has acid reflux and Dr suggested hydrolyzed formula, but I don't understand why. He was previously on Gentleease, when he was on normal formula he was extremely gassy and bloated but he has not been on that for over 3 months.

Hello,

I am glad you are asking questions and trying to understand your son's treatment for reflux. Do not hesitate to ask the doctor to explain things during the appointment or call and clarify the plan after the appointment.

There is increasing evidence that some babies with reflux respond to a change of diet as part of their reflux treatment plan. Trying one treatment at a time and watching and waiting to see the results is a common method of finding the best treatment plan. Some babies just need a change of diet to calm the reflux symptoms while other babies need a combination of treatments such as special positioning, diet and medication.

Milk Soy Protein Intolerance or MSPI and reflux have similar symptoms so the doctor may be trying a change of diet in case your son has a milk intolerance.

You might need to visit the doctor or check in by phone a few more times until your little guy is feeling better.

Best wishes,

Jan Gambino
