Q: Heartburn and pain in back.

I have IBS and recently bothered by heartburn.  I've also had several instances of terrible pain in the upper back which lasts and hour or two and then disappears.  My guess is that the pain is caused by excessive gas or I have heard it can be gallbladder problems.  Can gas cause pain in the back?  It is not associated with my heart as that has been tested.

Thank you.

Hey Mary,

Symptoms of gall bladder disorders can disguise themselves as heart burn and back/shoulder pain. I would follow up with your doctor. HIDA scans are good tests to screen for gall bladder disorders.
