6 month old son on Nexium for more than a month. Still not feeding well. Worry?

We've taken our son to the pediatrician several times and he does not seem to be worried even though my wife & I are very worried.  He has not gained any weight in about 2 weeks and might even be losing weight now.  What should I do?

Hello!

Poor feeding and weight gain or weight loss are worrisome symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease that need to be addressed by the doctor. Sometimes the doctor wants to try one treatment at a time to manage symptoms. This process can take days, weeks or months. Often 2-6 weeks on a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) with a brand name of Nexium is enough to decrease or eliminate symptoms.

I would recommend making an appointment with the doctor to discuss the symptoms to date. Be sure to prepare for the visit by writing a timeline beginning at birth.

It might look like this:

4 weeks: spit up, crying after meals

6 weeks: gained __ ounces, spit up, cry, poor sleep

8 weeks: gained__  ounces, changed diet, added __ medication

Then list the symptoms you are seeing now:

poor eating

Poor weight gain

weight loss?

What else?

Be sure to let the doctor know your biggest concern/s. these are the symptoms you want the doctor to aggressively treat.

When the doctor recommends a treatment plan, ask, How long will it take until we see an improvement? When should we call? When should we come back for follow up?

Be sure to let me know what you find out. You can send a follow up message here or privately on this site.

Take care,
