Q: I have had a cough for two years.

I cough, especially in the morning, until I almost vomit or do vomit.  I wake in the middle of the night coughing.  If I do work that entails bending, I cough and have to wait to continue until I stop and also catch my breath.  I feel like hot fumes are coming up.  I have been on Prilosec once a day, then twice a day; then switched to Dexilant then had Renatidine added.  Nothing works and nothing stops it.  I have also been given nasal sprays for post nasal drip which dries my throat and then I cough from that. I do have a small hiatal hernia.  My diaphragm is held up on one side from adhesions from a lobectomy.  Could this be holding the stomach valve open?  Is there anything else I can do or my doctor might do?

Many of your symptoms definitely sound like they are due to reflux. Coughing was my primary symptom for years and only once I started medicating for the "normal" symptoms did I realize that my cough was related.

You may want to seek a second opinion since your doctor has already tried so many things.

Has there been any consideration for surgery? That is now becoming a more common step for people who can't get relief through medication or for those who can't take the medicaitons for some reason.
