This is a bump on Alvin's question. I have been on Nexium only 2 months but twice have had sever anxiety attacks which caused me to go to the ER. I had one other such attack ( and none ever in my life) and that was 4 months ago when I first learned I may had Acid Reflux. Why does Acid Reflux turn into a scary bout of Anxiety at times? Any way to combat that when it happens?

I've Been on PPI's for over 5 years. During that time I have had generalized anxiety with occasional panic attacks. From what I have read ppi's can make it dificult to absorb some nutrients such as B1. Our bodies need certain nutrients to maintain balance. I know that seratonin is dependant on some nutrients that may become lacking when taking nexium. Low seratonin can cause depression and anxiety. Also my dentist says that ppi's can cause dry mouth and enzyme defeciency which can affect oral health.

Best of luck!

I have been taking PPI's every day for 9 years. I slowly developed an anxiet disorder and was diagnosed with GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) 3 years ago. This also lead to a major depressive episode. I was 48 yrs old when this happened and had never had anxiety or depression in my life, nor did I have any family history of either. There have been several (unpopular) studies that demonstrate the long term effects of reduced hydrochloric acid in the stomic - which is exactly what PPI's do. Without sufficent acid, your body cannot extract specific vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat, even if you eat healthy. According to studies I've read, these include B vitiamins, calicum and magnesium. I am only a partial responder to the benzo's and anti-depressents I've been taking - and I've tried quite a few. Diagnosing deficenies is not that straightforward. I have been feeling better after taking magnesium (topical). Good luck!
