Q: 14 year old daughter who vomits stomach acid 2-4 morning a week, Tums not working

Afterwards, she has intense pain in the middle of breastbone and can barely move. We have tried 2 Tums in the morning and 2 at night - does not help. She has also tried drinking a glass of water after each meal. Any suggestions or ideas?

Hello! It is really best to bring this to the attention of her primary care doctor. It could be reflux or it could be something else. Start with getting a diagnosis.

I would be happy to help you from there. My two refluxers are 14 and 17 years old and they have given me all of the on the job training I need...

Get her a caffiene-free can of soda and some saltines.  Have her sip the soda and prop up on cushions on her left side.  She needs to be elevated.  She may have a hiatal hernia above her stomach like I do.  The esophagus is highest when you are laying on your left side.  The soda will clean out the hernia, if she has one, and clean it out.

Take her to the doctor and ask about Aciphex.  It is great stuff.  She will only have to take one tablet per day.

Drinking water doesn't help.  Milk is better, the sugar in it, the lactose, cools down spice.

Another thing, she shouldn't eat after 6 pm.  That way, her system will have enough time to digest before bed.  She shouldn't lay down for at least 3 hours before bed.  It also helps if she can get a wedge pillow to sleep on, or raise the head of her bed 6 inches.

The reflux can cause scar tissue in her throat.  I have had to have my esophagus stretched.  It isn't painful, you are sedated.  One of the bad things is that food may become stuck in her throat.  I have had to have food extracted from my esophagus before.

Take her to a good upper-GI doctor.  He is her best bet.  TheresaGHW

Have her see a gastro spec now - dont delay - there is something wrong if over the counter meds are not working. Had the same problem - turned out my GB was not functioning and I was diagnosed todate with GERD and Atrophic Gastritis.

I am older and my problem did not clear up. Your daughter is just a child so f you take action now she should be okay.

My prayers are with you and your family.

I have a simaliar problem, I cough up acid about 3 or 4 in the morning and imediatialy go to my lungs cloggeing them up. I usually take pepsid chewable about 3 and wait takes 20 minutes to clear up. i usually eat hot cereal before I go to bed so the acid will work on it tru the night if I do not this happens not a pretty sight.I had my esop. removed 5 years ago because of acid reflux, had Barret and arestriction growing in pipes , food clogged up would not go down or up, I can eat now but have these problems.when acid comes up it burns my troat and mouth just try eating some thing at night and prop up the front of the bed to keep acid down. I have been tru a lot and just lucky to be alive.try these and see what happens.

Hello

I have experienced what your daughter is going through -not nice at all -I did not see a doctor until years later when I too was choking on food & suffering with major pain, pounding my chest. It really did feel as though I would choke.I finally did go to a specialist who has now done the stretching of the esph. 3 times now, I really found drinking milk was the only thing that would help when I was having it happen.I was prescribed Nexium which is amazing, it really works but is expensive -I was up to taking it 3 times per day. Then with the last stretch I mentioned to the doctor of the high cost,he gave me a different script that I have yet to fill, I have found since my last stretch it appears to be almost gone,or at least to the point I can get by with just tums and only occasional .I noticed this change also after loosing 30 lbs and no longer drinking any soft drinks-not sure if it had alot to do with it but I have put a few pounds back on & I am starting to feel it a bit again -also I was advised to avoid soft drinks, mint, chocolate -chocolate & soft drinks especially ?
