Q: what pain killers can be taken for hiatus hernia which is giving a lot of pain
I agree with Robichris that the pain felt from a hiatal hernia is due to the reflux. My concern though is that if the pain is new, it's very important that any cardiac causes of the pain be ruled out.
Unfortunately, pain killers themselves often make reflux worse due to the irritation they cause to the stomach. It's a short term gain/long term loss sort of situation and you can very quickly wind up with more pain due to them.

A hiatus hernia itself will not be the cause of pain. Very many people have hiatus hernia which can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter and permit reflux.
The pain you are expereincing will be from acid refluxing and attacking the esophagus. It should be taken seriously as recurring heartburn over a period of time can cause serious damage to the esophagus and in a few cases may even lead to cancer.
If you don't alreday, try using omeprazole. It reduces stomach acid production. But, unlike Tums, it is not an instant releif medicine taking a few days to beuild up its effectiveness.
But you should see your doctor if this has been going on for a while.
