Q: My daughter was born preemie at 35 wks, will be 5yrs old and has been vomitting since she was born.

My daughter was born preemie at 35 wks, and will be 5yrs old in 3 weeks and she has been vomitting since she was born. At first her doctor told me she will grow out of it by 2-3 yrs of age..then they said it was GERD, now her esophogus is mildly damage. When she was born the doctors said that her LES was weak and it will get stronger over time. Although it has, but she continues to throw up about 4-5 days out of the week. She was placed on prevacid, for three months now she is schedule for another lower endoscopy, in Febuary, 2010. She is unable to run, jump, laugh to much because she will vomit everything out. her bowel movements are normal. In addition to that she will vomit if she smells something very unpleasant.

Hello VicMia,

When a child cannot run, jump or play without having symptoms, it is really affecting her quality of life. To me, this is a signal that more investigation and treatment are needed to figure out why she is vomiting so much. Certainly GERD is a common cause of vomiting in infants. It is not as common in children and adults. I imagine the doctor is looking at GERD and other causes of vomiting such as food allergies and intolerances and related medical conditions. Often the doctor will take a small sample called a biopsy during the endoscopy and run some tests for other medical conditions and allergies. Has your daughter been evaluated by a food allergy specialist to rule out food allergies and intolerances? Maybe you will want to discuss this with the GI doctor.

You said that she can vomit even if she just smells food. Is she a picky eater or is she more sensitive to certain foods and odors? Let me know a bit more.

Thanks,

Jan

Hello, Jan

Thank you for your quick response. Mia had biopsy during the endoscopy and it came back normal. For the next 3 weeks I am to he GI doctor wants me to record her diet  as well as the time she vomits and bowel movements. Also as far as odor, it can be anything...istead of her gagging (like individuals do when an odor is unpleasant) she vomits, it is as if her sphincter is still weak and to relaxed. Thanhs again.

Hello!

Thanks for the update. I am glad the biopsies came back normal. That is good news!

It is a great idea to track her symptoms for a few weeks. I hope you and the doctor figure this out soon.

I don't hear of too many kids with GERD who vomit from the odor of food. Some vomit or gag at the sight of food if there is a feeding aversion. Maybe this is related? Does she seem fearful of eating or really picky about certain foods?
