I have cancer in the larynix and esophagus. The doctor says I must have surgery to remove the larnyx
The doctor says I must have immediate surgery to remove the larynx and also to remove the esophagus. I was told there are two procedures possible: 1) Remove esophagus and move the stomach into the chest cavity and reattach. 2) Remove esophagus and use a portion of small instestine to replace the esophagus. 3) Remove larnyx. I am told there is excrutiating pain during recovery and that quality of life is highly diminished. What are the fact of having these surgeries? I want to make an informed decision.
Hi LeAnn,
I am sorry to hear that you have cancer of the larynx and esophagus. Hopefully you are catching it in the early stages and you will have great success with treatment. Online sites are great resources for information to help you manage your care but should never be used as a replacement for your doctor's sound medical advice and treatment. Once you know what you are facing, you can find information here that will help you ask all the right questions to make sure you are getting the best, most informed treatment.
There are some links to information here that deal specifically with cancers of the larynx and esophagus. You can read about the larynx here and the esophagus here. Esophageal cancer requires immediate care. You can read about the treatments available here.
I hope you find something here that helps. Please do stay in touch and let us know how you are doing! Take care!
