Thursday, January 06, 2011 Mamina asks

Q: 3yr old vomiting only at night.

On Saturday, my 3yr old daughter came down with a mild fever (99 degrees) and headache. At around 5:30-6 am, she woke up very alert, happy and talkative. She spoke very clearly and wanted to talk about every thing. I took her temp, and it was 102.7. On Sunday, she was fine for most of the day, only a minor fever after the battle of the high one in the A.M., and in the afternoon she seemed to be completely better. Monday, she was still very active and alert, full appetite and all. Around 2-3am she had woke up very upset and mumbling things. All of a sudden, she was vomiting what seemed like everything that she had eaten during the entire day prior. Tuesday, same thing. She seemed to be fine during the day but with a decreased appetite. That night, she awoke around 2:30-3am talking about our cat and then proceeded to tug at the blankets pulling them off of me and her. She wadded them into a ball in the middle of the bed and when I asked her what she was doing and if she was ok, she got very upset and angry. Started saying that she couldn't do something. She was crying uncontrollably and would not let me get near her. This all happened very fast (within a couple of minutes). When I was finally able to calm her down, she burped and vomited everywhere. After that she went back to sleep for the entire night. Finally, today she was alert and active. She has slightly purple tone surrounding her eyes and very dry lips (have been bleeding from cracks). She does not want to drink or eat much now, but I did get her to eat a banana and some rice during dinner. And after putting her to bed tonight, she woke up 2 hrs later crying. Seconds later she covered the bathroom in vomit. Seemed again like not anything she ate throughout the day was digested, and her vomit had a greyish tent to it. I am calling her Dr. in the A.M. but thought he might think I am crazy since she does not have any other symptoms. Seems it does not matter what she eats or drinks, it all just comes up once a night. If I could get some ideas of what to be looking for, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Hello Mamina,

Between the fever and the vomiting, your daughter may be at risk for dehydration. Please do not hesitate to call the doctor for advice. The doctor will want to know what she  eaten, what she has managed to drink  and how often she has vomited during this time.

Sometimes the doctor will want to have you bring her in for a check up. Other times, he/she will give you advice over the phone about how to keep her hydrated and comfortable until she feels better.

I hope she has a restful night tonight so you can both get some rest.

Take care and keep in touch.

Jan

I called my Dr. office today, and I will be taking her in tomorrow morning. Her regular Dr. is not in, so she will be seeing a Dr. whom she has never seen before.

I just hope it is a good Dr.

She has only been vomiting once per night. She can nap and it won't happen. I don't even know what is safe to feed her right now. She really wants to eat some yogurt, but I don't know if I should let her. I don't know if it will upset her belly.

Also, she is refusing to drink juice, and she will only drink a little bit of water.

Good. I am glad you can see the doctor before the weekend. Even though it isn't your regular doctor, he/she will be able to give you some advice. You can always follow up with your regular doctor next week.

I am sure the doctor can give you some advice on the best foods and drinks for her. Meanwhile, sucking on ice chips or an ice pop, a little watered down juice or a pediatric hydration drink would be good choices.

Take care, Jan
