Q: Erosive Esaphogitis and Endometriosis

What does being pre-menstral have to do with erosive esaphogitis? I do suffer from endometriosis and have had a left salpingo oopherectomy.. When I am premenstral the pain in my left side is much worse.  Can carafate help? I take 4 doses of zantac a day but when I am pre-menstral nothing helps.  When I mention this to my doctors they all say it's not related but it is because that is when the pain is worse!!!

I have definitely noticed that my symptoms seem to change according to my cycle. Oddly enough my dentist is the first one to help me realize this. I tend to get a lot of ulceration in my mouth the week before my cycle. Most dentists blamed this on poor oral hygiene. One really good dentist asked me if it is worse before my cycle. I then paid attention and realized it was. Hormones can do a lot to our bodies that we don't even realize.

You may want to track your symptoms along with your cycle. While the docs are unlikely to do anything about the hormonal side of it they may then be able to give you a suggestion as to what to do during a flare up. Regardless of why you have the flare-ups your docs should be able to give you a protocol to follow.

thanks.. I know it is definitely the reason for the flare ups.. I was hoping to find out what to do during the flare up..I guess it's time to change doctors.  When I explain to them that the erosive esaphogitis pain is always worse when I am pre-menstral they look at me like I'm crazy or just disregard the comment.  This has been a very painful ordeal for me.  I have had trouble with the medications as well.  I tried acifex and that gave me stiffness in my left arm neck and left side so severly that when I stopped taking it, those areas where sore for days after. It also made me feel like I was going to pass out.  I also tried omeprazole and Cimedine and they had the same side effect. I now take Zantac prescription 600 mg a day.  I still get the stiffness but not as intense, I do have alot of tingling in my hands and arms and lips also I have a slight ringing in the ears.  I wish I could find somethin that helped with less side effects and honestly the zantac doesn't really help either.

I tried the carafate I think that had the worst side effect of all..I took one pill at 1030am 1/2 hr after taking it the stiffness in my neck started. That"s nothing compared to be woken out of sleep at 1230am with a spinning feeling and horrible abdominal pain..Needless to say Im not taking it..only take maybe one zantac a day..ringing in my ears has subsided but the pain in my side is sever..going for an excersise stress test to make sure heart is ok. have had ekg and eco sar far so good..I hope we find a cure one day as well..the pain is horrible..thanks for letting me know I am not the only one sufferin :-) Reply

Hi,  just wanted to update u..I went to a new gasro doctor and he is having me try Bentyl..it is an antispasmatic used to treat people with IBS, but it can also be used for esophogitis when the doc deems it necessary, The pain in my side has definitely subsided a bit..I do get a hollow type feeling in my stomach and a little bit of the stifffness in the arm and neck but not as severe as some of the other medicines..I have been taking it for a week hopefully the side effects will subside. I'll keep you postedWink
