Q: I've had a hoarse voice for several weeks. Can this be caused by Acid Reflux.

Yes, it can be due to reflux. Throat, and breathing issues are frequently unknown symptoms of reflux. For years, I had a very mild cough, & frequent throat clearing. I also got laryngitis often. The worst it ever was was the year before I started taking reflux meds. I had laryngitis three times that year. For me the laryngitis always started with a cold but the cough and lost voice would linger. Then I got "true" reflux symptoms and started on meds. I haven't gotten laryngitis since then and though I of course occasionally get a cough when I have a cold the chronic cough/throat clearing are gone.

My 10 year old also had a chronic cough that we were treating unsuccessfully as asthma. I started her back on Prevacid and it went away. She is now maintained on Zantac but a cold will set her back to coughing and we need to then treat her with Prevacid again before getting her back down to Zantac.

Good Luck - Stephanie
