Q: Projectile vomiting related to GERD or positioning in 10 m old?

I don't know if this is related to Reflux or positioning? My 10 m old grandbaby lives with me and for the past 2 weeks he has projectile vomited after taking almost his whole 6-8 oz. bottle. He has not shown any signs of reflux before, he is on Similac Advance and eats 4-6 jars of baby food in conjunction with 2-3 bottles a day. He his naps and bedtime while being rocked/held feeding him his bottle. Do you think it could be as simple as holding him more upright, or could this be a sign of reflux and the positon has nothing to do with it? He shows no signs of discomfort or fever, though his stools have been a little loose lately too. He does not have a fever. My son (not the baby's parent) is intolerant to milk as I am. My young daughter is at home with him and she just told me he projectiled his entire bottle after laying next to her in bed. I'm suspecting we are not holding him erect enough, but odd that it just now starts this pattern? Any advice, or suggestions. Thank you, nancy

Hello! It is best to call the doctor and figure out what is going on. Projectile vomiting may be a sign of reflux but it could be something else.

Check with your doctor symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux. They are usually non projectile vomiting, other signs are weight loss, recurrent respiratory infections, irritability and Apnea, which is periods of not breathing then gasping for air. Some management therapy, if it is acid reflex, is to have the formula thickened with rice cereal (1 tbsp of cereal/ 1 oz formula or breast milk). After feeding keep child in upright position for about 1 hour. There are also acid suppressants e.g. Zantac or parazole... Again it is best to speak with your doctor about symptoms and what is best for the baby..ESPECIALLY in regards to the medication...

If it happens to not be GERD (acid reflex) then it may be pyloric stenosis... in this case the vomit is projectile and has a sour smell to it with no bile present. Vomiting occurs immediately after feeding. a Major problem is the child is hungry and may be dehydrated, check how often he/she has a wet diaper. if not often the child should be taken to the doctor or hospital where he/she can be further assessed and properly cared for..
