Q: GERD/Asthma

I was diagnosed with GERD four years ago from an upper GI that showed moderate hiatel hernia and reflux with large amount of pooling and asperation into both lungs. This has caused Asthma and tons of lung problems.I have been taking nexium for four years now and it seems to be working ok ....that is until I lay down...not flat but 30-45 degree angle. I sleep in a hospital bed with the bed elevated in a sitting position. I have been seen by a surgeon and had a scope done to get ready for a surgical fix but .... they said they didn't see anything . I have had  continuous horseness and the cough is also continuous.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.I would love to have something done before my lungs are totally shot. ....and sleeping sitting up sucks!!

Hello Annie,

I wonder if you have been referred to a pulmonologist. My daughter has asthma and GERD which led to aspiration. She had a nissen fundoplication surgery at age 6 and since then her breathing and the GERD have improved greatly. It was a real team effort between the GI doctor and the pulmonologist to assess and treat the problem.

You may benefit from some of the newer high tech testing that is available such as multi channel impedence testing to look at the effect of the acid on the airway. If you have been on a PPI or acid reducing medication for some time, an endoscopy may not show any irritation/erosion. It just means the medication is doing its job to protect your esophagus.

Good luck and keep in touch.
