Q: My 3 month old daughter just got over colic and now acid reflux has appeared out of nowhere....help

My daughter was on Levsin for the first 3 months for colic/gas issues.  At 12 weeks the colic went away.  I took her off the Levsin and the acid reflux appeared out of nowhere.  Anyone ever heard of Levsin being used for this?  The doctor put her on Prevacid 4mg. 1x a day.  Didn't really do much after 4 days so we just upped it to 3xs a day.  How long does it take the medicine to start working.  She is silent reflux.  She doesn't ever spit up anything but a small amount of clear acidy looking fluid.  She also seems to have a lot of spit.  She is refusing to eat and cries when she does.  Should I try to thicken her formula.  The doctor changed her formula from Good start soy to alimentum.  I am really worried because she is eating about 1/2 of what she used to eat.. when does acid reflux start getting better?  I am desperate for any advice... I will take colic over this any day!!

Hello!

So sorry your little one is having some digestive issues. It can be challenging to decide which symptom is "colic" and which symptom is "reflux" in a baby since there are overlapping symptoms. Is the crying and fussiness from colic or reflux or both?

I am concerned about the symptoms you are describing now that are often associated with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD: silent reflux and an increase in secretions. Certainly these symptoms are different than colic.

It can take some time and effort to find the best treatment plan. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all treatment so you and the doctor will need to look at the options available and try to find a good fit.

When a baby has silent reflux and an increase in secretions, thickening the formula, elevating the sleep surface and medication are often recommended. There are different types of medications to consider. Some babies respond well to the acid reducer medication while others benefit from the motility medications that help the food move thru the digestive system faster.

Certainly changing the diet is another treatment that helps many babies. It is important to go slow and steady, changing one thing at a time and evaluating each change with the doctor.

My son is 3 1/2 months old and also has reflux. He is on nutramigen and 5mg of prevacid 2x's a day. It took about a week for it to help. However this is an ongoing battle. He has his good weeks and his bad ones. We started adding rice to his bottle and now he is waking up every hour with gas pains. The doctors advice...he'll grow out of it. Thats not what a very tired parent wants to here though. Good luck to you and your lil one.

Oh no! So sorry you have new symptoms to deal with. Sometimes that happens. Is it possible to go back to Nutramigin without the cereal?
