Q: I've had an acidic mouth for two weeks now, and it's not going away, even my lips are burning

As a breastfeeding mom at the age 27, I'm concerned about the acid taste in my mouth I've had for the past two weeks.  I don't wake up with the acid taste, it just developes during the course of the morning.  It doesnt matter if I've eaten or drinken anything, it comes regardless.  I'm scared about my teeth, and the reason that my body is doing this, as well as any affects on my baby.  Is this because of breastfeeding, or should I stop breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding and hormones can do very weird things to our bodies. But, if the breastfeeding is going well otherwise then you certainly don't want to assume this is due to the breastfeeding. It's entirely possible that you would stop and the symptoms could continue.

Since the symptoms have been going on for over two weeks, you should see your doctor and ask for her advice as to how to proceed. You may want to ask her if she sees this in other postpartum or breastfeeding mothers and see if she can determine the cause. You also may want to consider keeping a food log for a few days. Are you drinking enough water? It is so easy to not drink enough when you are nursing and the taste might be related to water intake. I know when I was nursing my kids I often had to make myself drink because in the craziness of the day I would realize I hadn't had anything or very little.

Keeping a food and symptom log will help you and your doctor see any trends in your symtpoms.

Thank you for your answer.  It's funny, the taste got less and less on Sunday until now.  I don't think I even have it today, or thought about it, until I remembered I asked this question.  I am going to the dr. for it soon, so we will still get it checked out.  Thank you again for your answer, very helpful.
