Sunday, December 06, 2009 Colin Bruce Hopkins asks

Q: My wife suffers regular reflux of much clear sticky bile after eating solid food. How treated?

Nexium & Zantac have had little effect. Note that she drinks much white wine. Is that the main problem? She resists any surgical type tests so far. She now is nervous about eating any solid food and is probably not getting enough calories except by the wine.

She needs to be on the Nexium and Zantac consistently for a couple of weeks in order to determine if they are working. If she was and they did not work then she needs to go back to the doctor and let her know that the medication did not work. She may need an assessment of her gall bladder or may need an endoscopy.

Wine can irritate the stomach but the biggest concern at this point is that it is the only thing she is eating in fear of food coming back up. This can very quickly become a problem. She should see her doctor as soon as possible.
