how does ion exchange resins work as an antacid?
Hi Mirza,
"Anion exchange resins" (Bile acid sequestrants) are not prescribed for acid reflux. They are cholesterol reducing medications. They work by blocking the bodies ability to absorb the cholesterol. You can read more about them here in the Cholesterol section of the site. I suppose it is possible that if this medication blocks the body from absorbing Cholesterol, it could inhibit acid production as well, or perhaps coat the stomach lining. The best person to ask would be your doctor or pharmacist.
I hope this helps!
