can gerd be passed down from a parent?

I am 40 I went to the doctor yesterday with chest pains... he said that I have gerd... what is it? could I have gotten it from my parent? How much does smoking affect it? Soda (diet coke)? coffee? doctor put me on zantac... what does it do? seams to make me burp... why?
