Hello Arlene,

Heartburn is a common symptom of GERD in adults. Coughing, hiccuping and the sensation of food getting caught in the throat are also reported. It is a good idea to report these symptoms to the doctor. While heartburn may be treated with diet and as needed OTC (over the counter) medication, your symptoms are more significant and should be evaluated  by the doctor.
