Q: Does anyone have any experiences with a muscle relaxer called baclofen?

And what about Erythromycin? I've seen both medicines cited in connection with treating infant GERD, but don't know much about them. I have read that Baclofen can be dangerous.

We have a 7½ month old baby with GERD. He's on Prilosec, which does help some, but he still suffers from reflux fairly often. In addition, he suffers from extreme gas, which really causes him pain - especially at night, when he wakes up farting like a fraternity boy. It really hurts him - probably more than the reflux itself.

Anyway, any suggestions or answers? Thanks!

Hello!

Most of the medications for reflux reduce acid. Often reducing acid is enough to reduce or eliminate symptoms. Sometimes reflux is associated with delayed gastric emptying also called poor motility. Baclofen and Erythromycin are two medications that may be used for motility. Do you think your little one is digesting food slowly? You could talk to the doctor to see if other treatments are needed.

Be sure to discuss the gas with the doctor. While reflux occurs in the upper digestive tract, gas is more of a lower digestive tract problem. Gas may be associated with malabsorption of food or food allergies/intolerances.

Let me know what you find out.
