Thursday, November 12, 2009 sylvia asks

Q: i have had pain and attacks under the right side of my rib cage for 2 years.

i am 26 years old and sometimes i wont have the attacks for months and sometimes they are several times a day. It is a stabbing pain that doesnt go away with any medications. Alcohol and Narcotics enduce the attack. My scopes and MRi for my abdomen have both come back with nothing. I was put on nitro glycerin a few months ago and have had to use it only twice but it does not seem to work. I need to know what it is and how to fix it or manage it so i can continue to live well. I have developed anxiety from this mystery and it is hard for me to do things like a normal 26 year old would do. Please help

Hi - sorry to hear you suffering too.

did you find an answr to your problem yet? I am not a Dr or medically trained. I have been suffering pain under the right rib cage for 4-5 years now.  Worse when eating foods and worse when eating fatty/sugary foods. Due for laparoscopy next month to look at colon.Abdomen swollen most days, pain affects concentration, unable to work presently as mine has progressively gotten worse and affected my diaphragm (breathing, so diaphragm is a guess), caused distended and swollen painful stomach with peritonitis symptoms for 6-8 months - that was a challenging time!

Pain moderate to severe (stabbing&dull ache) did used to disappear, now just constant and very bad. Solution prsently that seems to be working, is taking soluble migraine tablets (inflammation/paracetamol) but it seems to work better with my pain killers - although i have to be careful of dosage. The pain killers hadn't been working v. well (codeine) and it got so bad that i had to try something else and it seems to be working. I have been told 'ibs' but it isn't as i dont have symptoms (have taken Colpermin online test), i think the Drs say that until they can find out what it is.

I had an ultra sound of ovaries, clear as well as internal.

Ultrasound of lower abdomen

Bladder had 'urinary retention' - coudl be due to codeine tabs /fecal compaction caused by tablets .. not sure. pain gets worse when bladder full now but this wasn't the case until 4th year.

tube down throat showed nothing.

Tube up bottom didn't make it very far (i woke up during anasthetic - poss due to tolerance levels due to taking so many pain killers! they stopped the process).

MRI showed nothing.

Blood/urine/stool tests came back clear.

If you find a solution/answer to your problem, could you let me know please.. thx u.. and i hope some of this information helps you in some way.. Foot in mouth
