Q: differentiate between GERD and hiatal hernia

Trying to determine what to talk to Dr about.  Know I have a small hiatal hernia but am having violent ephisolds of belching, diarea, nausea about twice a year.  Seem to come at times when have been on vacation and eating a lot but cleaning out is violent and lasts 10 to 12 hours - followed by several days sleep.  Nausea hangs on for almost a week after then am OK again for a while.  Any ideas??????????

This could be a food sensitivity or intolerance. It does not necessarily sound like reflux nor does the diarrhea sound like it would be due to the hiatal hernia. It would be good to try to write down when you remember this happening. Does it always happen with vacatoin or is it sometimes at other times? Does it seem to happen at the same time each year? Do other people have similar symptoms at the same time?

You may want to read more about irritable bowel to see if it sounds like your symptoms:

These would be all questions to think about before going so that you can give your doctor as much information as possible.
