Monday, May 24, 2010 Jody M. asks

Q: Is there a way to deal with asthma symptoms caused by acid reflux during the night?

I have had the reoccuring issue of night time asthma issues related to GERD for about the last 4 weeks. I awaken in the middle of the night about 4 to 6 time hacking, wheezing and throwing up acid.  I'm exhausted not to mention frustrated because even doing a breathing treatment with my nebulizer isn't working... but I suspect that it is the reflux and not the asthma that is the root cause of the problem.... What I need to know is what I can do once the symptoms start so that I can go back to sleep.  Any suggestions?

Is your reflux being treated? My daughter's chronic cough was not helped by asthma meds but once on reflux meds she was able to get off of all of the asthma and allergy meds. This stopped the night time coughing. Unfortunately, before that once she started the night coughing there was nothing she could do to make it stop other than sit up get a drink and wait it out.

Jody,

My daughter has asthma and gerd. Sometimes it isn't entirely clear if the cough is asthma (inflammation) or gerd (irritation) or both. The pulmonologist (lung specialist) worked with the pediatric gastroenterologist to find the best combination of treatments to control both. Like Stephanie's daughter, the GERD medication did a lot of suppress the cough.

Sleeping on pillows or a wedge might help both the asthma and the gerd. In addition, make sure there isn't some post nasal drip or allergies lurking to steal the sleep away from you.

Hope you get some rest!

We also replaced the carpet with hardwood in an attempt to help with the dust allergies. Not the least expensive fix but we love having no carpets in the house :)
