Q: 6month old reflux getting worse help please!!!!

Hi

I have a six month old girl, who is currently on a PPI. Started solids 5 weeks ago as reflux was getting worse and I was worried about weight gain. Since the solids have started she is full of wind and vomits two out of four of her feeds .She could vomit 4 times in a row, She only takes a few spoonfuls of bland solids, but the back arching crying during feeds is back and will only take 2-3 oz of feed then falls a sleep. I tried her on a lactulose free formula but she refused and gagged on it. I am due to see a dietician in 2 weeks but I am really concerned about her weight and her refusing bottles. Please help!

Thanks

Hello Iinda,So sorry your little girl is having some difficulty with reflux. It is common to have feeding and weight gain problems. You are not alone!

My reflux babies were not ready to eat baby food like other babies without reflux. I had to take a break, try again and see if they were ready. If she is arching and showing distress during the spoon feeding, she is trying to communicate that eating hurts, doesn't feel good, or it is scary for her. Let her sit in her high chair and play with the spoon and her bib but do not feed her. She might enjoy playing in the high chair while you are eating a meal. It is good practice for her. She needs to feel that eating is pleasant and fun.

I know you are trying to help her to gain weight. If she likes her formula, the dietician may be able to help you add calories and thickener to the formula to help her gain weight. Some babies need a milk and soy free formula too. Ask the dietician if there is another formula to try.

I have written many Shareposts about feeding a baby with reflux so use the search function on this site for more information. I would be happy to give you some links too if you need assistance.

Thank u Jan, I appreciate your prompt reply. She enjoys sitting in her high chair and often would try and grab food from our plate. I find the morning feed the most difficult to keep down so i havn't been able to offer her breakfast she usually takes a root veg for dinner but i'm curious to know what would be the best thing to give her before bedtime as she often looks for something before her bedtime feed. I used to give her rice but i think that was making her more windy.

THANK YOU
