There has been a lot of research coming out lately about the long term usage of Proton Pump Inhibitors. The research shows that long term usage puts people at increased risk of bone fractures. More recently, there is research that also shows they can also lead to low blood levels of Magnesium.
Before changing anything in your medication schedule, you should talk with your doctor about your specific situation. For example, my mom has been taking PPIs for as long as they've been available (at least 15 years). In her case, the risk of bleeding out from an ulcer is greater than the risk of fracture. Her primary care doctor monitors her bone mass and is now monitoring her Magnesium levels.
Best of Luck - Stephanie
