Tuesday, August 18, 2009 Sue R. asks

Q: I am sure that I have erosion in my esophagus due to acid reflux as I get food stuck

I have used an acid reducer that seems to take care of the acid, (over the counter) but I have had a number of episodes  where food is actually stuck and I end of throwing it up to get it released.  The last one was really scary as I drank water trying to dislodge it, but started choking.   Finally, I threw up and it dislodged and whatever was stuck came up.  I guess my question is, if I took Nexium or a presciption whatever, would it help heal the erosion.  My doctor inferred that I could heal by myself if I stopped the heartburn.  I don't think that is working.  Thanks,  Sue Rogers

Hi Sue

Did your doctor not suggest an endoscopy to have a look at your oesophagus? I had one in January which confirmed serious inflammation but no ulcers or scarring. I think it is good to check.

A year of ppi's (lansoprasole, nexium) has eliminated the inflammation and I seem to be healing well. Also a reflux friendly diet has contributed enormously to my recovery.

I think you should ask your doc again (or use another one!)

best wishes

Suze
