Alex is How are you doing?

I am the mother of a 2 year old (who also had acid reflux for the first year of his life) and now my 7 month old has it, too.  He has been on Prevacid for the past 4 months and it has worked as far as him getting thru his feedings w/out screaming....HOWEVER, even at 7 months he still spits up a lot (after every single bottle...A LOT of spit up) and seems pretty fussy all day long.  He still is not sleeping too well at night (up every couple of hours) and just seems tired and grumpy all day long.  I've tried keeping to a routine but it is virtually impossible because he is just all over the map w/ his sleeping (or lack thereof, I should say!)  I feel guilty letting him cry it out (even though that is what his pediatrician recommended) because of his reflux...I just still feel like he could be experiencing some discomfort??  I just don't know what to do, I guess....any suggestions would be great.  I feel like everyone around me has these easy going babies and I still feel like I have a colicky newborn :(

Dear Alex,

You really have your hands full with two little ones. Seven months is a long time to be dealing with reflux. I know it will get better but you and the doctor have some work to do to get there.

It might help you and your doctor to discuss the big picture if you keep a logbook or journal of symptoms for a few days. I know you can barely write a shopping list much less take notes! Write down when your son is awake/asleep, fussing, eating, etc. When you approach the doctor, explain what you think is normal baby behavior and what is not. Get feedback from the doctor about the pain issue. Some babies with reflux need a special diet in addition to medication. Some babies need two doses of the Prevacid (PPI), 12 hours apart, 30 minutes before a meal for the best effect. There are more options beyond that.  IF the doctor doesn't seem to be able to help you reduce the pain, it might be a good idea to ask for a referral to a gi specialist.

Meanwhile, stay right here for support. There is a rich discussion on the Share Post section of the HealthCentral site. A few moms have gathered there to chat about their babies. You will find much support and acknowledgement for your difficult job as caretaker for a baby with reflux.

Best wishes,

Jan Gambino

Hello,

How have you been going? My son Jack who is 6 months has reflux and has never slept - wakes up every 2 hours.  This may sound stupid, but I've only just put it down to reflux though.  He is such a happy baby now and so I thought I had his medication sorted, but I now think he is under-medicated and that his reflux is waking him in the night time.

Last night I just tried to re-settle rather than feed and he was arching is back and going stiff as a board (his old reflux tell tales signs) so I think maybe because he doesn't have the distractions that he does during the day and he's lying flat all night he can't sleep through the burning and wants to feed.

Did you find an answer?  The longest Jack has slept is 6 hours and he's only done that 4 times - some sleep for me and him would be really, REALLY exciting and over due.

PS - Jack is on Losec.
