Q: My baby throws up after he eats at least 2 times a day.

It is a forceful vomit that comes out his nose every time. It seems like it happens when he is full. This has been happening for the past 2 weeks. He is breastfeed, could it be from something I am eating?

Hello!

It sounds like the forceful vomiting is a new symptom. A pediatric gastroenterologist once told me that spit up (dribbling food/stomach contents from the mouth that is not forceful) is harmless but vomiting and especially forceful vomiting or projectile vomiting (food and stomach contents come up and out of the mouth fast and forcefully, even landing a few feet away from the baby) needs to be investigated. There are many causes for vomiting from a stomach upset or virus to an allergy or reflux disease. Make note of when you are observing the vomiting and either call or visit the doctor. Also note if he has other symptoms such as burping, discomfort, coughing or choking.

Some babies ingest a lot of air when they are nursing or bottle feeding. If he makes a loud noise when he drinks or takes big gulps throughout the feeding (not just when you have the letdown of milk), he might be ingesting air. This could also cause a wet burp, spit up or even on occasion, some vomiting. However, it sounds like what you are describing is more of a daily pattern of vomiting.

Please let us know what you find out. Also, how old is your little boy?

Best wishes,

Jan
