Q: My 8 month old cries off and on all day for hours straight.... She still only eats 4 oz. at a time..

I have two children a 2 year old and an 8 month old.  My 8 month old daughter has been crying for at least 4-6 hours a day everyday since she was 2 months old.  She was diagnosed with reflux because of her not putting on weight, crying, and not eating well....at that time she was only eating 2 oz. at a time.  After some time and a lot of work I was able to get her to eat 4 oz. every 2-3 hours.  She has not been able to move past 4 oz.  If I feed her more than 4 oz. she spits it all up and cries and cries for more to eat.  I soon discovered a new sympton with her... her lymph nodes in the back of her head down her neck were swollen.  I took her to the doctor and they said she was fine it was because at the time she had cradle cap and a mild case of excema.  They said that once she was clear of that they would go away.  After some formula changes and taking care of the cradle cap and excema she slowly seemed to get better with the crying.. she only cried a few times a day... but still was not able to eat more than 4 oz. and was not putting on much weight...  4 months later the doctors said even though she is very small for her age and still not eating as much as she should they said her reflux was gone and wanted her on baby food.  I tried her on baby food and then things went bad.  She cried and cried.  I took her off of the baby food and stuck to just formula and she was better... again only crying a few times.  Now she is 8 months old still eating just formula... only 4 oz. every 2-3 hours... and she cries all day long.  She cries for a total of 5-8 hours out of the day.  She will only stop crying if you pick her up and craddel her or if she is in the car.  Her lymph nodes are still swollen even though the cradel cap and excema is gone.  The strang thing is that at night she is more calm and goes to sleep around 10:00pm and sleeps all night.  I don't know what to do.  I have taken her to 3 different doctors and they all say she is fine.... am I going crazy or do I have to start to worry?

Hello!

Oh my...how did you find the time to write this Sharepost message? One finger typing? Two children under the age of two and a baby with health issues. You are one amazing mommy!

My first instinct is-why is this baby crying so much? Crying is a baby's way to communicate distress such as pain or discomfort. Second, why is eating so difficult for this little girl? By 8 months, she should be able to drink an entire bottle.

Tell me what type of doctors you have consulted so far-pediatrician? pediatric gastroenterologist? Other?

Third- often eczema and feeding refusal are associated with food allergies or intolerances. She may be sensitive to the foods she eats and even the ingredients in her medications.

You really need a doctor who will explore why your baby is in pain.

Please keep in touch and let me know how you and your family are doing.

Hi there,

After reading these posts, I decided to write my story.  In brief:  8 month old boy, diagnosed with acid reflux @ 2 months by pediatrician.  Has been taking Zantac and drinking AR formula @ 2 months.  At around 4 months, noticed red itchy flare ups on son's cheeks, pediatrician said it was eczema.  Over the last 4 months, his eczema has gotten worse, where his itching has caused skin infections.  Just recently had an allergy test done, and he came up extremely high for eggs, but my son does not eat...a thing.  He fusses when we attempt to give him food and his intake of formula ranges from 2, 4, and sometimes if we are lucky 5 ounces per feeding.  He is a "silent spitter."  He just saw a gastro-enterologist, and we are thinking of having a scope done on him to see what is going on internally.

Any thoughts????

Thanks!!

Hello!

I am going to contact the writer of the original message and ask for an update on her 8 month old. How ironic that a year later, you have an 8 month old with similar symptoms. You can also contact a member of HealthCentral by clicking on their screen name and sending a secure message.

Skin rashes, eczema and reflux symptoms are often related to food allergies and intolerances. It is a good idea to proceed slowly with new foods and even check the ingredients of over the counter and prescription medications. Sometimes testing such as an endoscopy helps to pinpoint the cause of symptoms. You might also want to talk to the doctor about changing the formula.

Hello Smudge, Is your baby having skin problems too like rashes or eczema?

I know it is frustrating when a baby keeps spitting up despite a reflux treatment plan. I assume your baby is on medication in addition to the special formula? I wonder if thickening the feeds or starting solids would decrease the vomiting a bit.

THanks for responding,  no generally he doesn't have any eczema or rashes. Sometimes he comes out in one but that is a birthmark that when he gets hot it gets a bit worse. He is on Losec omeperazole and the pepti junior formula. It is more the spitting up and he is a bit wingy. It varies how much he throws up sometimes it is heaps and other times it isn't much!! I am thinking that see how he goes to 12 months, apparently when he stands that can make a big difference. He eats a lot of solids and brings up some of that too, he has nearly three meals a day. I am at a loss unfortunately there doesn't seem like there is just one answer!

Hi Jan,

Thanks for your response.  I've mailed the person with the original post, and hopefully I'll get a response.  It would be interesting to know what happened in their situation.  I have tried different formulas, but unfortunately my son will not drink the ones we have tried, and as he drinks so little as it is, I'm happy that he drinks what he drinks with the AR formula.

Thanks!!

Hello!

I am so sorry that you and your son have been working so hard to eat and grow for 8 long months. I am wondering why he is growing so slowly even with the feeding tube. Does he still vomit frequently? It is hard for him to tolerate enough food even with the tube? My daughter needed a feeding pump to slowly drip the formula into her tube. Are you doing that? I will email you privately too.

Of course you don't feel like a good mother but you are an amazing mom. Your son is so lucky to have you for his mom.

Take care, Jan

I have been going through the same recently with my Daughter, but I'm not sure about the lymphnoids, but I am going to check now. Does your child see a gastro dr.? My daughter is going to have an advanced barium swallow. Advanced meaning with a speech therapists, the help with babies sucking. Has your baby had anything like this? My baby cries during the day, cries when we try to feed her to the point that she screams and pushes the bottle away, until recently she did sleep pretty good at night except for one bottle, but the past coulple of nights she has been waking up screaming and not taking her bottle. Has anything changed since you wrote your question?  Please email me at Duranie512@aol.com

Have you test her for food allergies or any other allergies like rubber, latex, etc ? Keep looking until you find the answer.
