I've been dealing with this problem since the end of April. It's gotten a lot better from what it used to be. Months ago, I would literally choke while coughing as if my airways were closed up. I was told that the acid is irritating my through/larynx and making me cough, and the cough is causing my airways to spasm and close up. I find that I have absolutely no appetite at all, even when I'm hungry. Have you been checked for asthma? I was told I have a mild form of asthma that's worsened from the coughing. I would go to the doctor and ask for a prescription of Nexium.

OMG - i've had the same thing - both my fiance and I think we came down with H1N1 about a month ago.  When we were seen, the doc sent us home with normal influenza.  One month later, we feel better (not quite 100%, but we don't feel "sick" anymore) - but this horrible, chronic cough will not go away.

And lately, we are both having the same 'episodes' - where out of the blue, we start to cough so hard and our throats feel like they are closing.  It's scary - i cannot breath for like 5-8 seconds (while gasping for air) - I am literally choking.

Went to get checked for pnemonia - negative; they don't know what's wrong.  But this choking thing is getting serious and scary.  And thank you for detailing the symptoms - because each time i try to 'come up for air' i just end up burping/beltching.  This is horrible - like nothing we've ever experienced.  Anyone have anything on this?  THX in advance.

Trust me, you're not alone. I had the same thing... I had bronchitis before all of this. I was given antibiotics and it seemed to work the first day but then the cough got worse. Then I started noticing a lot of heartburn and I lost quite a bit of weight without even wanting to lose it. I went to the ER before and gave my parents a scare when I was having one of these coughing attacks. None of the doctors I went to could figure out what it was but my family doctor told me that I have GERD, which can cause chronic cough, and sinus problems (making the cough persistent). You seem to have symptoms of acid-related problems... I had the same burping/belching problems. You don't necessarily have to have heartburn to have acid reflux, but I think it's what's making you cough. You should try Nexium or Tecta, it works really well. I started on Tecta a couple days ago and I noticed that my cough improved a lot, I don't cough as much anymore. And the rolaids soft chews seem to really help too when you feel like you're about to have a coughing attack.

I have similar symptoms, caughing, choking, burning, horrible stomach pains all over,  and for many years have had acid reflux.  I am having an asthma specialist check my lungs since it seems as my acid reflux is going into my lungs causing me to choke at night. It does not help i have allergies. I will be getting endoscopy to check for the problem and also to see if I am allergic to Gluten. Currently I am taking nexium in the morning and Prisolec, Prilose is sold over the counter, at night along with having an inhaler for the day to clear up my lungs. I can only suggest to keep searching and be persistent with your doctors. Elevate your mattress where you rest your head, take allergy meds that work for you, take some over the counter acid reducer while you wait to see your doctor. You should really see a doctor.
